Questions parents ask
Frequently asked questions
How does Read Fluency measure reading fluency?+
Your child reads a short, grade-level passage aloud for about 60 seconds. Read Fluency listens in your browser, follows along, and counts the words read correctly per minute (WCPM) plus accuracy, then compares the result to national norms.
What is WCPM (words correct per minute)?+
WCPM is the number of words a reader reads correctly in one minute. It is the standard measure of oral reading fluency that schools use to track reading progress.
What are the Hasbrouck–Tindal norms?+
They are widely used national benchmarks for oral reading fluency, broken down by grade and time of year. Read Fluency compares your child's WCPM to these norms to show a percentile.
Is my child's voice recording private?+
Yes. All speech recognition happens inside your browser. The audio never leaves the device and is never uploaded or stored on a server.
Is Read Fluency really free?+
Yes. It is completely free, with no signup or account required.
What devices and browsers does it work on?+
Any device with a microphone. It works best in Google Chrome or Safari, on a computer, tablet, or phone.
What grades is it for?+
It is designed for kindergarten through 5th grade, with grade-level passages for grades 1 through 5.
How accurate is the score?+
Treat it as a quick screening check-in, not a formal diagnostic. It uses your browser's built-in speech recognition, so results can vary with microphone quality and background noise.
